MLA Style and Citation Guide (Purdue OWL)

At CISH we use MLA format for all academic papers and assignments. You must follow MLA guidelines for;

  • Formatting your paper/assignment.
  • In-text citations
  • Works cited

The Purdue OWL is an online guide for MLA. It provides detailed instructions on how to format in MLA and create citations and a works cited. You can also use EasyBib which is a citation machine that helps create citations for you. Links to both websites are below;

What is MLA?

MLA stands for the Modern Language Association. It is a style of writing academic essays and listing sources of information used in an essay.

What is a source?

A source is something you use to get information. There are many types of source. For example, books, news articles, and websites are all sources. Sources can also be an interview with a real person.

What is a citation?

A citation is a list of information about a source that helps the reader find it. Citations are used to show the reader where you found your information and also to give credit to someone else for their work.

When should I use an in-text citation?
